We are seeking to be like Christ

Christian Formation

We have a variety of Christian Formation opportunities for
Adults
Young Adults
Youth
Children

  • We consider Christian Formation to be the lifelong journey of growing in faith. Through prayer, worship, study, fellowship, and mission we can experience spiritual growth in our lives.
  • We recognize that Christian Formation is the continual process that gives purpose and meaning to our lives as followers of Christ.  UUMC strives to offer opportunities for learning and growth and support for one another as we seek to be like Christ.
  • In addition to the age-specific opportunities below, we have events throughout the year for all ages, such as our Fall Fest and seasonal workshops, e.g., during Lent.

Young Adult Activities

Our congregation includes a growing number of young adults in their early 20’s through early 30’s, and we are committed to developing our young adult ministry. We have met at local restaurants for discussion-based evenings and are now planning Sunday lunch get togethers. Watch this space for details or contact Karen Nazareth at uumc.dce@verizon.net or 301-422-1400 for more information.

UUMC is proud to be affiliated with the United Methodist Campus Ministry (Wesley Foundation) at the University of Maryland. The United Methodist Campus Ministry strives to be a safe space for discussion and growth of all students, regardless of theological identity, race, nationality, sexual orientation, or gender identity. For more information about campus ministry events, see their website.

Youth Activities

United Methodist Youth Fellowship - Our young people in grades 6 through 12 get together for a range of activities that focus on:

faith + fellowship + fun!

Last year we enjoyed retreat weekends, lock-ins, Rock 2009 and mission projects such as serving dinner at Safe Haven.  We took part in the Service of Lessons and Carols on Dec. 27, 2009.  From Jan. 22 - 24, 2010, our youth will be attending Rock 2010 in Ocean City, MD.  Watch for information about our Souper Bowl fundraiser on Feb. 7!

Children

Sunday School

We offer a nursery for babies and toddlers during the 11 a.m. service. The nursery, located downstairs, provides a variety of toys and cribs for children's comfort and enjoyment. Caring church members provide a loving and safe environment for the children from 10:50 a.m. until after the worship service.
Partway through the 11 a.m. service, children from preschool and older leave to go to Sunday School. In their age appropriate classrooms, children are taught using the "Rock Solid" motivating Christian curriculum.

Vacation Bible School is a summer favorite and we offer a week-long morning program, with afternoon puppet and sports camps and a youth service camp also available, in partnership with Riverdale Presbyterian Church.  This year's dates are June 21 - 25.  Registration information will be available soon.  Questions?  Contact Karen Nazareth at uumc.dce@verizon.net or 301-538-8879.
