UUMC Visual Arts Guild Exhibit – The Art Glass of Deborah Fravel

The use of colored glass in churches seems to date to the 7th century. As knowledge of the use of minerals to make stained glass, and the ability to fire kilns hot enough, improved, the use of stained glass in churches became a common way to tell Bible stories. By the 10th and 11th century, stained glass was a complex art form that contributed strongly to the worship experience. Glass artists are required to be designers, artists and engineers – a stained glass window can weigh 400 lbs per square foot!

UUMC Visual Arts Guild is pleased to exhibit the work of Deborah Fravel, who was inspired to become a glass artist by growing up in a town with three glass plants. She began working in glass only five years ago. Deb loves range of bright colors available and the way that light plays with these colors. She enjoys a variety of glass techniques especially stained glass and kiln-formed glass. Her background in quilting is frequently evident in the graphic design of her work. She is the Secretary of the National Capitol Area Glass Guild and is a member of Colesville United Methodist church.

Early Response Team Training

·         Would you like to work with your hands?

·         Can you work independently with little outside support?

·         Would you like to be Christ’s presence to people following a disaster?

An Early Response Team (ERT) is a small self-sufficient group of volunteers who go into a disaster area after the First Responders have secured the area and help begin the process of helping survivors put their lives back together. ERTs typically travel on short notice to disaster areas either in the BWC or in nearby Methodist Conferences at their invitation. All ERTs are trained through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and are ready to stabilize an area in preparation for Volunteer In Missions (VIM) teams. The BWC is in the process of recruiting and training ERT volunteers so we are ready to respond when a disaster strikes. An information session will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. at Providence-Fort Washington United Methodist Church, 10610 Old Fort Road, Fort Washington, Maryland.

Job Posting – Art Curator

UUMC’s Visual Arts Guild is searching for a new Art Curator and Guild Grand Pooh-Bah. Duties include discovering hidden artists, building and encouraging the UUMC Visual Arts Guild as your creative community, finding exhibitors, placing and taking down exhibits, writing encouraging, illuminating and enticing blurbs about the exhibits and bulletin boards and other duties at your own discretion. You need imagination, a certain pushiness, and an enjoyment of power (since the decision of the Art Curator on the suitability of exhibit materials is FINAL!).

Our exhibit walls are like the baseball diamond in Field of Dreams. We’ve built it and the artists will come with just a tiny bit of encouragement. This job could open a new career avenue. The rewards are plentiful, but not monetary. The 14-member UUMC Visual Arts Guild will be your partners, friends, inspiration and fellow struggling artists. This is the best job in the church – and it could be yours! Contact: Michelle Marcotte (marcotteconsulting@comcast.net 301-262-9866)
