Fellowship Opportunities

UUMC Investment Potluck (March 12)

What is an endowment? What are our investments?  What can I do to ensure the financial stability of UUMC for years to come? If you have been pondering any of these questions, then you do not want to miss the potluck on March 12th following 11 a.m. worship.  The church’s financial advisor will be here to share with us information regarding endowments, investments, and giving.  Please plan to stay for the presentation and bring a dish to share as we learn more about the financial security of the church.

Lenten Dinners – Coming Soon To A Home Near You

Our congregation has a wonderful tradition of dinners, hosted at member’s homes during Lent, to provide a time of fellowship.  These small gatherings make it possible for us to get know each other better.  It is also a great evangelistic opportunity.  People without a church home or not regularly attending a church can be invited to join your Lenten Dinner.  Those who wish to host a Lenten Dinner in their home should contact Sarah Wakefield (301 262-7262) or Ann Matteson (301-441-2885).  You can also sign up on the sheet in the narthex.

Mission/Outreach Opportunities

(1)    Loaves and Fishes Café (March 19)

Each month, after worship on the third Sunday, we share a hot meal with the community.  Volunteers are always welcome to visit with our guests, help serve, or assist in the kitchen.  Set up and clean up assistance is needed also.  Questions? Contact Ellen Brown (, Susan Howley (, or Sarah Wakefield (

(2)    Help-by-Phone Food Bank

We can “make a difference” in our community by continuing to support Help by Phone, Ltd.  Our eight food pantries, open five days a week, continue to meet needs of large numbers of people who simply do not have enough food on any given day.  Pantries need the following canned or dried food donations in sealed containers to meet health department requirements.  Please confirm that the expiration dates have not passed.

grits                  pancake mix & syrup                baby food                    beef stew         pudding & jello

dry milk             coffee & tea                             cocoa                           cold cereals      macaroni & cheese

rice                   peanut butter                           jelly                              tuna                 pork and beans

pasta               canned fruits & veggies                        pasta sauce                 oatmeal                        soups

Donations can be placed in the wooden box in the narthex.

(3)    Easter Egg Hunt Candy Donations

On April 2nd, following worship at 11 a.m., we will have a community Easter Egg Hunt.  We have lots of plastic eggs, but we need lots of candy.  Please bring individually wrapped candy.  We need small piece that are able to fit in the plastic eggs. We will be receiving donations through the last Sunday of March. On the 2th, we will gather after worship to stuff the plastic eggs.  Volunteers are needed to assist with stuffing the eggs and providing supervision on the day of the event.

(4)    Lent Mission Opportunity

Each Lenten Season a mission project is identified for us to support.  In light of the current crisis in our immigrant communities, particularly with our Hispanic/Latino brothers and sisters, we will be raising funds to support the College Park/Hyattsville Hispanic Ministry led by Pastor Israel Suarez.  Our goal is to raise $1000.  The Lent Offering Containers can be picked up from the table in the narthex.  If you received a box of offering envelopes, you can use your Easter donation envelope.  There are also Easter envelopes in the narthex that can be used for your donation.

(5)    Immigrant Plan Petition

Mission Projects can take many different forms.  In addition to raising funds to support the College Park/Hispanic Ministry, we have an opportunity to let our voices be heard by our elected officials.  There will be petitions available during Lent to let our elected officials know we are not in support of the actions the President is taking against certain immigrant populations.  Sign on and show your support.  Petitions will be in the narthex, on the mission’s board, and in the parlor.
