We are seeking to be like Christ

Christian Formation

We have a variety of Christian Formation opportunities for

  • We consider Christian Formation to be the lifelong journey of growing in faith. Through prayer, worship, study, fellowship, and mission we can experience spiritual growth in our lives.
  • We recognize that Christian Formation is the continual process that gives purpose and meaning to our lives as followers of Christ.  UUMC strives to offer opportunities for learning and growth and support for one another as we seek to be like Christ.
  • In addition to the age-specific opportunities below, we have events throughout the year for all ages, such as our Fall Fest and seasonal workshops, e.g., during Lent.

We recognize that our Christian faith journey continues throughout our lives. Our church offers adults a variety of opportunities for learning and growth.

Sunday Morning at 9:30 a.m.:

Chapel Class

The Chapel Sunday School Class is led by Mary Norman.  It meets in the chapel every Sunday at 8:30 a.m. during the summer.  Beginning September 20, it will return to its regular 9:30 a.m. time.  Currently, the class is studying ‘Hope and Confidence Come from God’.  Come grow in the knowledge of God and His will for you.  You don’t know what you are missing if you are not in a Sunday school class.  No one is too old to learn more.

Pastor's Small Group Study (Parlor) - Resumes in October)

Pastor Sherri will lead a small group class on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. in the parlor.  We will tackle difficult questions and search for faithful answers as we strive to make sense of life’s journey.  Some of the topics to be discussed are: suffering and evil, science and creation, and the resurrection: true or false.  Come with your questions and let’s search for answers together as strive to unite faith and knowledge.
Cluster Disciples Classes

Disciples Orientation Meeting (September 14)

There will be an orientation meeting to distribute class materials and provide information about the Disciples classes being offered.  Commitments for the classes are necessary so that materials can be purchased.  For additional information or questions about the Disciple classes contact Douglas A. Mangum of College Park UMC by email ( or by phone (301-474-7874). You can also speak with Candy Fosta, Carla Clemons, or Frances Notley of UUMC who participated in the Disciple Classes last year.

Disciple I (Begins September 14)

Disciple 1 Class (the red book) is tentatively being scheduled for Monday nights at 6:30 p.m. with orientation on September 14.  The location will either be College Park UMC or Mowatt Memorial UMC.  The class will meet for 34 weeks (not including orientation) with a two week break around Christmas/New Years.

Disciple II (Begins September 24)
Disciples II Class will be held at UUMC (parlor) on Thursday nights at 6:30 p.m. beginning on September 24.  There will be an orientation session held on September 17.  The book for this class is “Under the Tree of Life,” (yellow book).   Old Testament books examined will be Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Ruth, Esther, Daniel, Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations and Song of Solomon.  New Testament books examined will be the Gospel of John and Revelation.  The study is a 32-week time for renewal of our faith journey - consider it an opening of our hearts, minds, and doors.  What doors do we each need to open a little wider this year?  What "REVELATION" is waiting for us at the end of this year's study journey?  Note:  Everyone is invited to participate in the Disciples II study, even if the individual has not taken a Disciples 1 class, as long as the person understands the study commitment.
