15 hours per week – with the potential for growth in hours

University United Methodist Church (UUMC) is looking for a dynamic Director of Music or Minister of Music coordinate to lead music at all worship services, including Sunday mornings, special services planned throughout the year, and funerals. This person will equip and direct volunteer musicians including singers and instrumentalists, as well as teach and lead the congregational singing during worship. The Director of Music/Minister of Music will work with the pastor in the planning of worship.  This individual plays a crucial role in spiritual growth and transformation through music.

Who We Are:

UUMC is a diverse congregation located adjacent to the campus of the University of Maryland (College Park). We have an excellent music department with many trained musicians and vocalists.  UUMC needs someone who is able to rebuild our music department and re-kindle relations with the University of Maryland staff and students.  We adore our pipe organ and organist, but would like to have an additional staff person who is able to play along on the piano. We have a great staff and congregation who are eager to welcome our newest team member. 

What You Will Do in this Position:

Work closely with Pastor to plan and execute passionate, relevant and effective worship that engages people of all ages and abilities:

 

       Identify, recruit and equip individuals in the congregation and community to provide music at the Sunday morning worship service, other special services throughout the year (including but not limited to Advent, Christmas Eve, Lent, Holy Week, bi-annual cantatas), and concerts.

       Constantly strive to elevate the quality and consistency of music while allowing versatility and creativity in style and format.

       Ensure compliance with copyright and licensing laws by completing all necessary documentation and following guidelines set by licensing and copyright agencies.

       Maintain organization within the music room and storage area.

       Recommend appropriate congregational selections for the worship theme and Christian year.

       Select appropriate choral selections to complement the chosen worship theme.

 

 

Develop and lead comprehensive music ministry:

 

       Notice, name and recruit volunteer musicians and vocalists.

       Strengthen and direct the worship choir/musical team.

       Enhance spiritual growth of choir members and musicians by offering biblical interpretation of chosen selections.

       Work closely with organist who reports to you.

       Create and direct additional choirs, such as student choir, youth/children’s choir, men’s choir, women’s choir, jazz choir, spirituals choir, etc.

       Assemble, rehearse and direct choir and any smaller ensembles.

       Research and assimilate all songbooks, scores, song sheets, and music while maintaining accurate files of all music available.

       Ensure instruments are well maintained through the scheduling of tuning.

 

Other Duties as Assigned and Needed in a Growing, Active, Downtown Church 

 

       Nurture and care for choir members and musicians while seeking to always develop relationships with newcomers to the church and community.

       Participate in trainings, worship meetings, retreats, etc.

       Manage Music budget.

       Be an integral part of a small, efficient staff team.

      Work authorization for employment in the U.S.

What Else You Should Know:

We are an equal opportunity employer. The position requires the employee to be on site on Sundays and some evenings. Salary is commensurate with experience.
